Dental anxiety is a common problem that can keep someone from getting the dental care that they need. There are many reasons why patients may feel anxious about their dental appointment.

Speak up about your fear

If you have a fear of the dentist, it's essential that you tell your dentist about it. He or she will be able to offer assistance and ease your anxiety. If your fear is intense enough that you need someone to accompany you to your appointments, ask your dentist about that too. They may be able to help you schedule a consultation visit with the dentist ahead of time so that you can both get to know each other a little and feel more relaxed before the actual appointment.

Agree on a signal

When you sit in the chair at the dentist's office, make sure you agree on a signal between the two of you. This may come in handy during procedures when your mouth is numb, and you're unable to speak or indicate your pain. Your dentist will appreciate knowing when you start to feel discomfort and may need to take a break.

Take a trusted person with you

When considering your options for dental care, don't forget to discuss your fears with your dentist so that you can work together to find your ideal treatment. Some patients find that bringing a friend or family member along with them to the dentist can be helpful. Having someone you trust to lean on during your appointment can help ease your worries and allow you to relax more fully during treatment. Others find it helpful to bring a distraction, such as a book or music to listen to as they sit in the waiting room. Many offices also have televisions in the waiting area that you can use to help pass the time. Be sure to ask if you need to do anything special to prepare for your visit.

Consider sedation dentistry

Sedation helps alleviate anxiety and fear for patients receiving dental care. Ask your doctor if sedation is right for you.

  • Oral conscious sedation involves taking a pill or liquid medication to help you relax during the appointment. The level of relaxation is adjusted using additional pills as needed.
  • Intravenous conscious sedation uses medicine delivered through a needle inserted into your vein to help you relax. This type of sedation wears off quickly once the needle is removed.
  • General anesthesia allows patients to be under the complete supervision of a doctor during the entire treatment process. Patients are put into a state of deep sleep and are able to breathe on their own. They are unable to feel pain or discomfort.
